Research Project
How does the cerebral cortex generate perception and behavior? To address this weighty question, we're studying the auditory cortex and its function in sound localization. We would like to know how different sounds are represented in the activity of neurons of the auditory cortex, and how this activity is related to perception. Two approaches are being taken:
- We are recording from the auditory cortex of cats while they perform behavioral tasks. From these recordings, we will determine how cortical responses are related to sounds, and how they are related to behavioral events.
- In anesthetized cats, we are testing whether cortical neurons respond to illusory sounds as a human or cat listener would
