Central Systems Laboratory
Facilities
The Central Systems Laboratory at the Kresge Hearing Research Institute consists of three laboratory rooms plus the P.I.'s office.
One of the laboratories used for human psychophysical studies contains a double-walled anechoic chamber (usable inside dimensions 8.6 x 12 x 10.8 ft). The anechoic chamber is fitted with a computer-controlled device that can position two loudspeakers at any point on a 1.2m-radius sphere centered on a subject's head. The ante-room to the anechoic chamber is used as a control room and for offices.

The second laboratory is used for animal physiological studies of spatial hearing experiments. That laboratory houses a single-walled chamber that is lined with acoustical foam (usable inside dimensions 8.6 x 8.6 x 8.1 ft). The chamber contains two circular arrays of loudspeakers, radius 1.1 m, located in the horizontal and vertical planes; the speakers are spaced in 20-degree increments. The laboratory space outside the single-walled room contains facilities for control of the experiments, surgical procedures, and desk space.

The third laboratory houses a double-walled chamber that is used for the cochlear-implant studies. All human and animal experiments are controlled by Intel-based computers, using analog/digital interfaces from Tucker-Davis Technologies.
